📰 Trading around news: what each firm allows
Not a recommendation. Educational explainer only. No win rates, no rankings, no signals to follow.
A rules explainer only; no setups.
Scheduled releases (FOMC, NFP, CPI and others) can bring sharp moves, wider spreads and slippage. This page lists the rules, plus the practice of staying flat (news avoidance) for those who choose it or must.
What each firm allows
- Apex: trading during news is allowed for your normal strategy. Strategies that "chase the market" or place orders on both sides to gamble on the outcome are not allowed. No hedging. No non-directional bracket trading. The risk-ratio, Professional Standards and Unsustainable Strategies clauses also apply (Prohibited Activities, last checked October 16, 2026).
- Take Profit Trader (PRO): you must have no open positions and no open orders from 1 minute before, during, and 1 minute after FOMC statements/announcements (Wednesdays 2:00 PM ET), Non-Farm Payroll (Fridays 8:30 AM ET) and CPI. Fed speakers and FOMC minutes are allowed. Track events on TPT's trader calendar. PRO accounts must also exit before a price limit is reached or lose the account (PRO Account Rules §6, last checked October 16, 2026). For other releases, and for the Test and PRO+ stages, check TPT's rules.
- Tradeify: "News trading is allowed with no restrictions," at your own risk. It warns about slippage, says never to use the daily loss limit as a stop, and the funded 10-second rule still applies (News rule, last checked October 16, 2026).
Staying flat (news avoidance)
Check the firm's calendar, close positions and cancel resting orders (they count at TPT PRO), and mind time zones: TPT lists ET, and many readers are in CT (one hour earlier).
Cross-rule effects
A news spike can create an outsized day (consistency), and slippage under real-time drawdown enforcement can breach the floor. Overnight bans still apply.
Risk notes
Joe: spikes tempt fast stop moves; a written "flat by" rule is the simplest test of trusting pre-set rules.

How trailing drawdown moves
Take Profit Trader's own PRO example, in units of the drawdown: say your drawdown allowance is 3 units, so the floor starts 3 units below your starting balance. If open profit on a trade reaches 2 units, the floor rises by 2 units in real time. If you then close the trade at +1 unit, your balance is up 1, but the floor stays where it rose to, leaving 2 units of room instead of 3. The floor follows peak open profit and doesn't come back down when that profit is given back. It stops trailing once it reaches the starting balance. Source: TPT PRO Account Rules §5 (last checked October 16, 2026). On EOD types (Apex EOD PA, Tradeify, TPT Test), the floor updates from the closing balance but is still enforced intraday.

Before your next trade, write one line: the rule you set. Afterward, answer yes or no, plus one line on why. That's the whole exercise. No P&L, no screenshots.
