Trading strategies, explained through prop firm rules
Not a recommendation. Educational explainer only. No win rates, no rankings, no signals to follow.
Not financial advice. Futures trading carries substantial risk of loss. Firm rules last checked October 16, 2026.
How prop rules shape any strategy
The same setup plays out differently at Apex, Take Profit Trader and Tradeify, because drawdown type, consistency rules, daily loss limits, news restrictions and overnight bans all change what's allowed. Each explainer below includes the full rule table with sources and last-checked dates.
- Apex PA and Tradeify: flat by the close. TPT: check TPT's rules.
- TPT PRO: flat from 1 minute before to 1 minute after FOMC, NFP and CPI.
- Tradeify funded: the 10-second hold rule for payouts.
- Apex: no small targets against disproportionately large stops, and no using the trailing threshold as a stop.

Take Profit Trader's own PRO example, in units of the drawdown: say your drawdown allowance is 3 units, so the floor starts 3 units below your starting balance. If open profit on a trade reaches 2 units, the floor rises by 2 units in real time. If you then close the trade at +1 unit, your balance is up 1, but the floor stays where it rose to, leaving 2 units of room instead of 3. The floor follows peak open profit and doesn't come back down when that profit is given back. It stops trailing once it reaches the starting balance. Source: TPT PRO Account Rules ยง5 (last checked October 16, 2026). On EOD types (Apex EOD PA, Tradeify, TPT Test), the floor updates from the closing balance but is still enforced intraday.
Joe's note
I've been trading futures for 3+ years and I'm still working toward a first payout. My leak was never the setup. I sit through stop losses fine, but I move my stop up on winners and get taken out before my target. Pre-set rules matter more than the setup, and the hard part is trusting them. I log every rule I break in Joe's rule-break log. โ Joe
FAQ
Can I hold trades overnight at Apex, TPT or Tradeify?
Apex prohibits holding positions through the market close, and Tradeify requires being flat by 4:45 PM ET. For TPT, check TPT's rules; we couldn't confirm it on an official page.
Which firms restrict trading around CPI, NFP and FOMC?
Take Profit Trader PRO: no positions or orders from 1 minute before to 1 minute after FOMC statements, NFP and CPI. Apex allows news trading for your normal strategy but bans chasing and two-sided gambles. Tradeify allows it with no restrictions. Details on trading around news.
What's the difference between intraday trailing and EOD trailing drawdown?
Intraday trailing (TPT PRO, Apex Intraday PA) moves the floor in real time with peak open profit, including unrealized gains. EOD trailing (Apex EOD PA, Tradeify, TPT Test) updates from the closing balance, but the floor is still enforced during the day.
Does a consistency rule apply to my evaluation or only to payouts?
It depends on the plan. Apex: PA payouts only. TPT: Test 50%, PRO none. Tradeify: Select eval 40%, Select funded none, Growth funded 35%, Lightning 20โ30%.
Is scalping allowed?
Tradeify funded accounts need over 50% of trades and profit from holds longer than 10 seconds to request a payout. Apex bans HFT and small targets against disproportionately large stops. No minimum hold time was found at Apex or TPT.
Can I use the daily loss limit or the trailing threshold as my stop?
No. Apex says not to use the trailing threshold as a stop loss, and Tradeify says never to use the daily loss limit as a stop loss.
Why do these pages not recommend a strategy?
Because this is education, not advice. No approach is shown to be profitable here, and nothing is ranked. The point is how each approach interacts with firm rules, and whether you follow the rules you set.
